What is a landfill?

The sanitary landfill is defined as a legally authorized place where municipal garbage is deposited and sorted for subsequent burial.

The landfill site must be large and must be prepared prior to use in order to avoid leaching of contaminants into the soil.

The general steps to be followed are as follows: Compaction of the soil, Placement of high density Polyethylene liner; gravel filters and soil layers. When the life of a landfill is over, it is filled with gravel filter, geotextile, HDPE liner, geotextile, gravel filter, geotextile and finally, a layer of soil.

It is the last step to be considered, and should only be justifiable when the previous steps (thermal recycling and mechanical recycling) have been exhausted.
