Typical PP Production Processes

At this point, we will use a process classification scheme based on the state of aggregation of the monomer carrier phase. From this perspective, there are three major families of processes:

  • a) "Slurry" processes (SP), in which the catalyst and polymer particles are suspended in a "slurry" formed by a diluent or "carrier" that contains the dissolved monomer and the suspended solid to form the slurry.

  • b) Gas-Phase Monomer Processes (GPP) in which the monomer is in contact with the polymerizing particles: the particles are suspended in a gaseous mixture consisting mainly of monomer.

  • c) Processes Using Condensed Monomer (Bulk Processes, BP): The solid polymerizing particles are suspended in a liquid medium consisting of the condensed monomer, without the presence of carriers or diluents. In turn, each of these categories includes various processes depending on the method of energy extraction and the geometric configuration of the reactor. Furthermore, the varying levels of catalyst activity used in the different processes result in different requirements and procedures, as will be discussed below.
