Recommendations for working with fume hoods

Limit heat sources to the minimum necessary, as they interfere with the display case's air intake.

Use only the minimum amount of product necessary.

Do not operate the display case while both the vertical and horizontal windows are open at the same time.

Move slowly to avoid turbulence.

If you detect a problem with the exhaust system, close the sash and notify the Laboratory Services staff. Do not use the fume hood, and mark it appropriately as out of service or malfunctioning.

After using a fume hood, it is recommended that you:

Leave the display case clean and tidy.

Close the sash and leave the cabinet running until the contamination has been eliminated (15–30 minutes).

The fume hood should not be used as a storage unit for chemicals, supplies, or equipment.

The use of personal protective equipment is recommended:

We recommend wearing long-sleeved lab coats with tight-fitting cuffs.

Wear gloves that are impervious to the solutions being handled.

Safety glasses.
